MARINE BIOLOGY RESEARCH CENTRE ( Tripoli-LIBYA )

The Marine Biology Research Center was established in accordance
with the general people's committee decision No. 1582/ 1981. In
September 1984, the Marine Fisheries Research Center merged with the
Marine Biology Re¬search Center (MBRC) of Tajura in or¬der to unite
and the capabilities the ex¬pertise of both centers.
The general people's committee decision No. 161/ 1992 re-entrusted
the Marine Biology Research Center by a mandate reorganizing the
center structure and tasks. The mandate assigned to the cen¬ter many
tasks and activities along with its previous tasks in order to
conduct applied research, provide and publish data and information
about marine biotic wealth, plan programmes and systems for its
conservation and rational exploi¬tation, and providing advice in the
field of aquaculture and marine wealth sec¬tor.
Since its establishment until now, the center had endeavoured to
accomplish these goals. Thus, it carried out a number of surveys and
research projects in an at¬tempt to identify the national marine
resources, reach an approximate estima¬tion of the national fish
stocks, and the possibility of it's sustainable exploita¬tion in a
manner that secure it's preservation as one of the renewable natural
resources.
In addition, a number of environmental physico-chemical properties
of provincial coastal seawaters were studied and identified.
Chemical and physical parame¬ters seasonally monitored to assess all
kinds of pollutants that could have nega¬tive effects on the
quantity and quality of the biological diversity..
The center is mandated:
